Know your responsibilities
Managing Your Tenancy
As a landlord you may face a number of issues from rent arrears to repairs. Whatever it may be, you need to act in accordance with legislation. Following the rules and managing your relationship effectively with tenants will help prevent arrears and encourage constructive behaviour.
Keep yourself up-to-date on the changing rules and regulations.
- You should use an approved tenancy agreement and protect your tenant's deposit. If you don't have one you wouldn't be able to serve notices on tenants if you needed to regain possession of the property.
- You need to understand how to create and end a tenancy and the different grounds of possession.
Attend our Landlord Foundation Course (discounted for Full Members). This one day course outlines all you need to know from start to finish of a tenancy, including your rights and responsibilities and practical help. You can also visit the NLA Online Library (FREE for Members) to keep yourself updated on the changing rules, regulations and responsibilities of a landlord.
